Music Spotlight: Banff

Two posts in one night, well this is unlike me…but trust me, this is worth it!

Banff is described as “a solo music project by Brisbane based song-writer Benjamin Forbes” and, as far as I can tell, this is the only song he’s produced so far.

I don’t care I love it.

This blinder of a song is just what you need at the end of a long weekend, or for some of you lucky travellers, the start of a long road trip. I’m really hoping he’s going to take off because this guys got some serious talent – so give him a listen and a follow because he’s surely got a lot more to offer!

Music Spotlight: Foreign/National

Fancy a bit of musical escapism this September? Well I have just the band for you, with the perfect ‘get away from it all’ band Foreign/National. Summer may be over for some in the world and just beginning for others, but with their beautiful track Life Tourist you’re sure to never feel far away from those rays!

The band describe themselves as “Five guys from Melbourne, Australia who use jazz chords, detuned keyboards, a heap of modulated guitar and lilting vocals to make what is best described as nostalgic, detuned, pop music” (Facebook) and that pretty much says it all, really. Although still unsigned, they’re already making musical waves, being featured in Triple J’s ‘Unearthed Featured Artist’, beginning their East Coast tour at the end of October, and they’re also playing Paradise Festival at the end of November – it won’t be too long until these guys get picked up.

All that’s left to say is have a listen to Life Tourist and let it take you away for 3 magical minutes:

Music Spotlight: Timberwolf

If you’re thinking, like me, that the weekend can’t come soon enough, fear not – I’ve found a wonderful track to help you drift through the next few days. Timberwolf is the alias of the uber talented Chris Panausakis, a 22 year old singer/songwriter from Adelaide. His song ‘Grace’ from his debut album ‘Man & Moon’ is a soulful, folksy track guaranteed to spring you into Summer, even on the rainiest of days!

If you’re lucky enough to be sunning it up in Oz, this is the perfect song for taking a bit of time to enjoy the rays, and if like myself you’re at home in the still slightly wintery UK, it’s a chance to close your eyes and think how lovely summer’s going to be.

Give it a listen and let me know what you think 🙂

What’s On: White Night Melbourne (22nd Feb)

Looking for something to do this weekend? Well if you’re in Melbourne you need look no further. This Saturday the city’s streets, lane ways and its many cultural venues are going to be transformed into an art and music extravaganza, buzzing all through the night from 7pm to 7am the following morning. White Night is back again.

With its 2013 debut attracting over 30,000 Australians and visitors alike, White Night really is a street festival like no other. This year it’s offering an even wider range of events and activities for people to take part in, from the breathtaking light projections all over the city, to indie film premiers and outdoor bands to keep the party going through the night.

The events are a mixture of free and ticketed, so you can style your night to your budget, but it’s recommended buying tickets in advance if there is anything you really want to see, as they sell out fast!

Get down there and see what Melbourne has to offer.

Music Spotlight: Flume

This week’s music spotlight is the wonderfully talented DJ and producer Harley Streten, better known by his stage name, Flume. This Sydney born electric wonder released his self-titled debut album in November 2012, and he shot to fame from there, winning in 2013 ARIA’s Best Male Artist, Best Breakthrough Artist, Best Dance Release AND Producer of the Year. Not too shoddy for a 22 year old…

The top track off this album has to be ‘Holdin On’ – if you like electro, you’re going to love this. It’s the ultimate summer club song to get you going, or even just plug the earphones in, turn it up, and get a good head nod on.

If you’re a fan, give this remix ‘Sleepless Club’ a listen. It’s been reworked by WEKEED, and it layers the New Zealand singer Lorde’s vocals from her track ‘The Love Club’ over Flume’s track ‘Sleepless’. A great new song to get over those winter blues.

If you have any suggestions for Australian artists you think deserve the spotlight, let me know and I’ll be sure to do a post!

Music Spotlight: San Cisco

This week’s band is the wonderful San Cisco, a cheeky indie 4-piece band all the way from Fremantle, Western Australia. With Jordi Davieson and Josh Biondillo leading the band with some gorgeous vocals, their happy-go-lucky style makes them a band that’s impossible not to love. Imagine if The Maccabees and Vampire Weekend got together and made sweet, sweet love – this would be their baby. Their self-titled album is only 40 minutes long, so well worth a sit down and a listen, but if I had to pick 2 favourite songs they would have to be ‘Awkward’ and ‘Rocket Ship’ – videos below. Give them a listen and roll on Summer!

Music Spotlight: Gang of Youths

Now, seeing as Music Spotlight is here to introduce new music to you lovely people, and my last post wasn’t exactly focussed on the ‘new’ part, I’ve decided to go super obscure with this week’s band choice.

Gang of Youths are a Sydney born collective, started in 2012 and who seemingly have only recorded one song so far. That I could find, anyway. It’s near-impossible to find out much about them (Google them if you don’t believe me) apart from that their song ‘Evangelists’ is an absolute belter.

Luckily for them, their obscurity hasn’t stopped them getting anywhere, as they were signed by Sony Records TODAY. Fancy that for good timing!

Anyway, there’s not much more to say about them (that I can really think of) apart from saying you need take a break from whatever you’re doing and give this song a listen; I promise it’ll be worth it.
